I got here ok. I took a taxi from the airport to Saint Francisville. The cab driver came originally from Detroit, and told me there are only two reasons why anyone leaves Detroit: either the gangs are after him or the police are after him. I elected not to ask him which was his reason.
S had left the car for me, as promised, and I found the key by the light of my cellphone. I’ve spent the night in Baton Rouge and it’s uncomfortable being back here – it feels like home, but somebody else’s. So this morning I’m heading out West, towards Dallas via Shreveport. For someone who’s looking for a bit of space, Texas ought to fit the bill nicely, but I’ll be glad to get out the other side of it. I need a desert and some mountains.

Today’s sensations: Much too far from the people I love, even those who are very close. Torn between keeping dumb statistics like this and living for the moment. Trying to convince myself that I am actually free to please myself, for once, and for practice spontaneously deciding to go to Walmart for some batteries. Enjoying the feel of warm morning sunshine on my face.
Hi Bruv
Good to hear you have arrived safely in the US and are now heading down the highway towards Texas – remember to lassoe a gorgeous sexy cowboy for me !!!
Enjoy the whole experiance of new places, new faces and taking the time to do all that you want when you want (well within reason ! – well within the law anyway !!!!) time to think and find yourself – and when you do I am sure you will love him as much as we do !!
At the risk of repeating myself I must write this quote again to you as i feel so strongly about it for you –
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do , than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour . Catch the trade winds in your sails . Explore . Dream. Discover .
Stay safe, Take care
your loving sis xxx
Thanks Sis,
There’s a cowboy tied up in the trunk for you, plus an ex-president who’s looking for a good home.

you didn’t mention the aromatic atmosphere in amarillo. i was there once, at cactus feeders. the largest feedlot in the world. the cows leave their impression on the entire city. i stood in one place and looked all around me and looking right back at me were 65,000 cows. now that’s a sight you’ll remember. guess you didn’t see the cows.

Hey Bill,
No, the wind must have been going in the other direction. Thank heavens for that. It would have put me right off my steak!
i had to go up the mountain several times to los alamos. not much there, i don’t recommend taking the trouble. however if you’re in santa fe on a friday you might check to see if they’re still doing the friday lunch at daylight

a bunch of the local commercial academics gather in the lunch room at daylight on fridays. daylight buys a stack of pizza. can’t go to the front door of the daylight building, always locked and unattended. no one actually works in the three story building, it’s generally vacant. but you climb the hill to the second or third story rear and you’ll find a door left open for visitors and that’s where you’ll find the lunch.

He must be right – I moved to the Detroit area four years ago and never left!
